Dr. Koumpouras is an expert in the diagnosis and management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). He is also an authority on clinical trials for SLE. He is clinical director of the Yale Lupus Program since the Summer of 2015.
At Yale, Dr. Koumpouras focuses his academic and scholarship activity on clinical research and clinical trials. He has been part of multi-center clinical trials leading to new therapies for SLE in 2011 and 2020. He leads a dedicated team focused on comprehensive SLE care. He also founded and co-Directs the Yale Rheumatology-Dermatology multi-disciplinary clinic. Dr. Koumpouras is currently developing the Yale Autoimmune Cellular Therapy program exploring carT for SLE and related diseases.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Koumpouras serves as Training Program Director and CME course director for Yale Rheumatology. He is a standing member on the COTW at the ACR and is developing a mentor program for new rheumatology Program Directors.
Dr. Koumpouras leverages his skills as an academic clinician and trialist to further collaborative research in lupus while fostering education for next generation of rheumatologists.
Aside from his career activities, Dr. Koumpouras enjoys ancient history, art, beach combing, poetry, chess and walking his dogs.
