Dr Paruk is a passionate physician and rheumatologist. She is a committed to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and improving the lives of patients with rheumatic diseases. She qualified as a physician in 2003 at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal and subsequently undertook her sub-specialty training in rheumatology. Dr Paruk obtained PhD in 2015 (UKZN). Dr Paruk has played an active role in teaching and training of registrars in the last twenty years and served and chaired several academic boards including being a member of both undergraduate and registrar curriculum review committees at a national level. She also works with the University of Namibia and has a played an important role in reviewing their undergraduate medical program and is currently part of their registrar committee working on developing a specialist training platform for Namibia. Currently she is a sessional consultant in Department of Internal Medicine and chairperson of the undergraduate training program and serves on the Departments executive committee.
Dr Paruk research interest includes epidemiology of rheumatic disease and she worked with other members of AFLAR in establishing the rheumatology workforce across Africa. She played a key role in determining the incidence if hip fractures in South Africa and creating the screening country specific FRAX® tool for SA.
