Gwenny Verstappen studied Pharmacy at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, and graduated in 2013. She specialized in immunology and defended her PhD thesis on T cell-dependent B cell hyperactivity in Sjögren’s Disease at the same institution in 2018. She subsequently joined the Immunology Division of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Melbourne, Australia, to study B cell hyperactivity at a functional level under supervision of Philip Hodgkin and Vanessa Bryant. After this postdoctoral fellowship, Verstappen moved back to Groningen late 2019, where she was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University Medical Center Groningen in 2023. Her research focuses on mechanisms leading to dysfunctional immune cells, in particular B cells, in systemic autoimmune diseases like Sjögren’s Disease.
